Chapter 11
—Be brave.—
“Your friend Nova is charming.” Brody’s voice was light as he stripped off his jacket and laid it on the back of the tufted chair next to the king-size bed.
“She’s great.” Layla didn’t turn around to face him as she slid off her heels. Too many emotions ran rampant through her right now. Relief and fear warred inside, both clawing for dominance. All while she tried to keep her cool. She was engaged to a monster.
“Richard definitely thought so,” he continued.
Before she could stop herself, Layla snorted and started taking off her earrings—a gift from Brody that she’d once loved. She glanced at him in the mirror.
“What?” he asked.
“Richard is the most boring man on the planet. Definitely not Nova’s type.”
Brody smiled then, back to Mr. Charming. Under normal circumstances, that smile would have melted her. Not anymore.
Not ever again.
“I’m sorry he interrupted our dinner.”
She simply nodded and tried to smile, but it was hard. His friend hadn’t interrupted, Brody had invited him.
“You’re annoyed with me,” Brody said suddenly.
She knew she needed to play things right but she wasn’t going to hide her annoyance. Because she didn’t think he’d buy it. She might have let him take the lead in so many things previously, but she hadn’t been a complete pushover during their relationship. She couldn’t let this slide.
After she took her second earring out and set it on the countertop, she turned to face him. “Yes, I am. I came here for a girls’ weekend with my best friend. A friend I haven’t seen in over a year. And then you show up, which is fine, but then you invite some random guy to have dinner with us. I wanted to spend the evening catching up with my best friend. A woman who is like a sister to me.” She crossed her arms over her chest, anger and fear surging through her.
For the first time since she’d known him, Brody’s façade started to crack. Little fissures that showed a glimpse of the monster beneath the mask. God, how had she not seen this before? He was actually angry at her. At her. When she’d done nothing wrong.
“I’m sorry,” he murmured, stepping closer as he placed his hands on her hips. “It was thoughtless of me. Of course you want to spend time with your best friend. Tomorrow you have a whole spa day set up, right?”
She nodded tightly, fighting not to cringe away from his touch. “Yes.”
“I’ll stay out of your hair tomorrow. I promise,” he murmured. “And I’ll make it up to you right now.” Leaning down, he nuzzled her neck, gently nipping at her earlobe.
Once upon a time, that would have softened her up and turned her on. Not that they argued much. Because she usually just let him have his way. Something she was only now realizing. God, she felt like a fool.
His touch made her shiver, and not in a good way. She was so close to escaping. Her best friend had backup. They could leave tomorrow.
